Your disciple Zongchi bows in veneration. You have deigned to bestow a kaṣāya made of Wanchun tree bark. It is recounted that in the time of Emperor Wu of the Liang, foreign lands presented only four robes, of which only one remains today, formerly worn by Master Wuqiong of Jianchu. Carefully investigating the Bodhisattva Precepts, it is stated that the kaṣāya one wears must all be dyed into an imperfect colour. How much more so for a naturally auspicious tree whose wondrous tint is heavenly formed! Words of resonance need not rely on external contrivance: 'ten thousand springs' expresses the name of longevity, and the two wings accord with the words of fine parables. Wearing it forever as I go about, it will constantly serve for the regular rites of poṣadha. How could it be only on New Year's Day that, donning the Tathāgata's robe, for the fortnight I am deeply indebted to your compassionate encouragement? Respectfully bowing in veneration.
