If one contemplates it ceaselessly, contemplation is accomplished and principle becomes manifest; whether subdued or severed, this is called purity of the mind. Thus, when not yet purified, it is called the consciousness-aggregate of ignorance; when already purified, because ignorance has transformed, it changes into illumination. When that which produces is illuminated, that which is produced is spontaneously and naturally pure. (If internal contemplation is accomplished, gathering phenomena through principle, then external phenomenal productions all converge toward the internal mind; this is called the purity of the internal mind. If passing through external objects, each phenomenal object is that toward which all dharmas converge; this is why it is called spontaneous merging.) You do not permit contemplating solely the three thousand inherently possessed in principle, but insist that one must contemplate phenomenal production, with external objects returning to the mind being called cultivating the contemplation of the true mark, and passing through external phenomena all returning to the internal mind being called cultivating the contemplation of consciousness-only.
