“You sentient beings, from beginningless time, have not heard the Three Jewels nor understood taking refuge; hence you revolve in the three realms of existence, now falling among animals to repay former debts. For your sake I now pitifully appeal to the Three Jewels, begging for their protection and mindfulness, so that your minds may open and understanding unfold to comprehend the wondrous meaning. I shall now confer upon you the profound and wondrous Dharma of the Three Jewels of One Essence. As for what is called the Three Jewels: the Buddha is called Awakening, the Dharma is called Non-delusion, and the Saṅgha is called Harmony. These three are the one, and this one is the three; neither longitudinal nor latitudinal, neither identical nor distinct, inconceivable—this is called the Secret Treasury. Supreme and most noble in the mundane and supramundane worlds, they are named Jewels; now we take the Buddha, Dharma, and Saṅgha as the Jewels. All myriad dharmas without exception return and converge here; hence they are named the Three Refuges. Although the principle is expansive and distant, it is nothing other than your own mind-nature, returning from not far away. You should deeply believe in this principle and take refuge in it. Let the great assembly be of one mind to confer upon these sentient beings the Dharma of the Three Refuges.”
