Answer: Positing that there is the real and there is the false is spoken in response to delusion to explain awakening. Obliterating the real and obliterating the false is to extinguish marks and abandon the fish trap. To define its purport definitively: the real is the real that is entirely the false; the false is the false that is entirely the real; the two do not have two substances. That the Buddha, the Great Sage, spoke of the real and spoke of the false was in order that people might admire the real and destroy all falsehood, so that falsehood could not arise. Worldly people do not understand this, stubbornly clinging to the idea that the single present thought of the deluded mind is already completely a buddha; this falls precisely under the ancient saying about mistakenly identifying and stubbornly presuming. If one further discards this deluded thought to search elsewhere for true thusness, this again matches the cultivation of the partial teachings, just like discarding waves to seek water or abandoning a vessel to seek gold. Both of these are faults of excess and deficiency. One must be neither identical nor separate, the wondrous being right therein; only then will it do. As to your intended question regarding whether the real and the false are identical or different, I now answer: within the non-identical and non-different, identity and difference are provisionally established. As for non-identical and non-different: the real and the false share the same source, and bondage and liberation are non-dual. As for provisionally establishing identity and difference: delusion and enlightenment are not the same, and sentiment and wisdom are different. Discriminating it in this way, it naturally accords thoroughly with the various scriptures, without need for exhaustive discussion.
