Answer: You doubt the simultaneous speaking and simultaneous hearing, concurrent expounding and concurrent listening. You should know that in every land and in every dust mote there is simultaneous speaking and simultaneous hearing; speaking and hearing occur at the same moment, with absolutely no different destinations. How wonderful is this realm! It cannot be sought through words and thoughts, nor can it be measured by ordinary human sentiments. It is the realm of the great general-characteristic Dharma-gate, still yet ever illuminating, and the hidden assistance of the dharmakāya. Therefore Jingxi said: 'I vow that on the day of liberation, the dependent and primary rewards will ever expound the wonderful sūtras, and not a single land or single dust mote will fail to benefit beings.' You also ask how the various sages can exercise hearing. Since it is said that the dharmakāya provides hidden assistance and all things concurrently speak, can they not all concurrently hear? In this way, words do not involve the tongue, yet a thousand sages hear them simultaneously. Because it illuminates, it ever speaks; because it obscures, they concurrently hear. The moment sentient beings hear it, they are identical to the buddhas; the former buddhas and later buddhas share this single standard. If one were further to establish a separate path, it would not be the Western Sage's single road of the nirvāṇa gate.
