The Buddha told Bhadrapāla: "If one maintains this practice, one will immediately attain the samādhi in which the present buddhas all stand before one. If there are monks, nuns, upāsakas, or upāsikās who cultivate according to the Dharma, fully uphold the precepts, dwell alone in a single place, and recollect that Amitābha Buddha of the West is presently there, they should recollect in accordance with what they have heard. Separated from here by a hundred thousand koṭis of buddha-lands, that land is called Sukhāvatī. Recollecting him single-mindedly, for one day and one night, or up to seven days and seven nights, after the seven days have passed they will see him. It is just like what a person sees in a dream, not knowing day from night, nor knowing inside from outside, not being prevented from seeing due to being blocked or hindered in the dark. Bhadrapāla! When the four assemblies constantly form this recollection, all the great mountains and Mount Meru within the realms of the buddhas, and whatever dark places there are, will all open up and clear away with nothing blocking or hindering them. These four assemblies, without possessing the divine eye, see through thoroughly; without possessing the divine ear, hear through thoroughly; and without possessing spiritual foot-travel, reach that buddha-land; without dying here and being born there, they see him right on this seat." The Buddha said: "The four assemblies in this land recollect Amitābha Buddha, and because of their focused recollection they are able to see him, whereupon they ask: 'Maintaining what Dharma does one attain birth in this land?' Amitābha Buddha answers: 'Those who wish to come and be born should recollect my name without resting, and they will immediately attain birth here.'" The Buddha said: "Because of focused recollection, one attains rebirth. One should constantly recollect the Buddha's body with its thirty-two marks and eighty secondary signs, its hundreds of millions of rays of light illuminating completely, dignified and incomparable, preaching the Dharma amid the saṅgha of bodhisattvas. Do not destroy forms. Why is that? Because one does not destroy forms, by recollecting the Buddha's physical form, one attains this samādhi." The above clarifies the method of the buddhānusmṛti-samādhi.
