When one wishes to enter the bodhimaṇḍa of samādhi, one should follow the Buddha's taught method entirely. First, one must prepare the bodhimaṇḍa, arrange the venerable image, and sprinkle and sweep with scented water. If there is no buddha hall, a clean room is also acceptable. Having swept and sprinkled according to the Dharma, take an image of the Buddha and arrange it against the west wall. Practitioners may do so from the first to the eighth day of the month, or from the eighth to the fifteenth day, or from the fifteenth to the twenty-third day, or from the twenty-third to the thirtieth day; four periods each month are ideal. Practitioners should weigh the weight of their household duties, and enter into the pure practice of the Path during these times. Whether for one day or up to seven days, all must wear clean clothes, and shoes and boots must also be new and clean. During the seven days, all must maintain a continuous fast of one meal a day, with soft flatbread and coarse rice, pickles and sauces as available, frugal and restrained in measure. In the bodhimaṇḍa, day and night, restrain the mind continuously, focusing the mind on recollecting Amitābha Buddha, mind and voice continuing together. Only sit and only stand; during the seven days one may not sleep, nor is it necessary to bow to the Buddha or recite sūtras according to fixed hours, nor is it necessary to hold prayer beads; simply know to join the palms and recollect the Buddha, in thought after thought forming the visualization of seeing the Buddha. The Buddha said: "Visualize and recollect Amitābha Buddha's true golden-colored body, its light illuminating through, dignified and incomparable, before your mind's eye. When properly recollecting the Buddha, if standing then stand, recollecting ten thousand or twenty thousand times. If sitting then sit, recollecting ten thousand or twenty thousand times." Within the bodhimaṇḍa, one must not put heads together and whisper. Day and night, either at the three periods or the six periods, profess to all buddhas, all worthy ones and sages, the celestial courts and the netherworld, and all paths of karma. Disclose and repent the various sins committed through the karma of body, speech, and mind throughout one's entire lifetime; having repented according to the truth, return to recollecting the Buddha according to the Dharma. What is seen of the realm must not be spoken of casually; if good, one knows it oneself; if bad, one repents it. Make a vow concerning wine, meat, and the five pungent roots: hands shall not hold them, mouths shall not eat them. If one violates this speech, then may evil sores break out on both body and mouth. Or vow to recite the Amitābha Sūtra a full hundred thousand times, and daily recollect the Buddha ten thousand times. Recite the sūtra daily fifteen times, or recite it twenty times, thirty times, according to one's capacity, vowing to be born in the Pure Land, and wishing for the Buddha's gathering and reception.
