Disciples [such and such] knock their heads and make respectful obeisance to all the Buddhas throughout the reaches of empty space and the entire dharmadhātu, the twelve divisions of the canon, all the great bodhisattvas, śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, and all the noble beings, asking them to accept the disciples' invitation to enter the bodhimaṇḍa and bear witness: The disciples today at this moment have received the instruction of a spiritual friend, and the disciples disclose and repent. From the time before we were awakened up to the present since our awakening, in the interim, our three karmas have created sins. The karmic actions of the body were unwholesome: killing and harming sentient beings in countless numbers; stealing wealth and goods as vastly as the sands of the Ganges; lust blazing intensely, defiling various pure practices. The karmic actions of speech were unwholesome: lying, frivolous speech, harsh speech, and double-tongued speech, defaming the Three Jewels and stirring up boundless disputes. The karmic actions of mind were unwholesome: greed for fame and pursuit of gain like the ocean swallowing streams, the fierce fire of anger burning away all merits, creating the sins of the ten unwholesome karmas through ignorance, committing them ourselves and teaching others to do so, rejoicing upon seeing and hearing them, whether great or small, not daring to conceal them, now repenting them all. We pray that the Buddhas in their compassion will bear witness and receive us, not disregarding our wishes. May all the sins repented today at this moment be extinguished as soon as they are repented. The disciples take this merit of buddhānusmṛti to repay the kindness of creditors and debtors, who, receiving this merit, may soon part with one another and be reborn together in the pure land. With dedicated hearts we take refuge, prostrating ourselves before Amitābha Buddha.
