Fourth, as for the Land of Eternally Quiescent Light: the principle of the tathatā dharmadhātu illuminated by the ultimate wisdom of wondrous enlightenment is called a 'land'; it is also called the land of dharmatā. Yet, true thusness and buddha-nature are neither body nor land, though body and land are spoken of. Apart from the body there is no land, and apart from the land there is no body; designating it a 'land' is one phenomenon with two meanings. The dwelling place of Vairocana in the Samantabhadra Contemplation is called 'Eternally Quiescent Light.' Question: The Avataṃsaka explains ten kinds of buddha-lands; does this [classification of] four subsume them all or not? Answer: Not only does it subsume the ten. Someone has even said that the sūtras explain twenty-seven grades of buddha-lands, and the land of Immeasurable Life is only the sixth; when matched against the four in the present text, it subsumes them without exception. Question: Why not rely on the ten and the twenty-seven? Answer: Even if there are texts to that effect, the intention when seeking to match them with the four teachings would be difficult to discern.
