藥山夜參不點燈，山垂語曰：「我有一句子，待特牛生兒即向汝道。」時有僧曰：「特牛生兒也，自是和尚不道。」山曰：「侍者把燈來。」其僧抽身入眾。雲巖舉似師，師曰：「其僧却會，只是不肯禮拜。」

At Yaoshan's evening assembly, no lamp was lit. Yaoshan gave this instruction: 'I have a sentence; when a bull gives birth to a calf, I will tell it to you.' At that time, a monk said: 'The bull has given birth to a calf; it is merely that the Upādhyāya does not say it.' Yaoshan said: 'Attendant, bring a lamp!' The monk drew back and slipped into the assembly. Yunyan related this to the Master. The Master said: 'That monk understood, but he was simply unwilling to bow.'
