曹山行脚時問烏石靈觀禪師：「如何是毘盧師法身主？」石曰：「我若向汝道，即別有也。」山舉似師，師曰：「好箇話頭，秖欠進語。何不問為甚麼不道？」山却來進前語，石曰：「若言我不道，即瘂却我口。若言我道，即謇却我舌。」山歸舉似師，師曰：「古佛。」

When Caoshan was on itinerant pilgrimage, he asked Chan Master Wushi Lingguan, "What is the master of Vairocana, the lord of the dharmakāya?" Wushi said, "If I were to speak to you, there would be something else." Caoshan cited this to the Master. The Master said, "A fine huatou, only lacking a follow-up phrase. Why didn't you ask, 'Why do you not speak?'" Caoshan went back and presented the previous phrase. Wushi said, "If I say I do not speak, it would mute my mouth. If I say I speak, it would twist my tongue." Caoshan returned and cited this to the Master. The Master said, "An ancient Buddha."
