Caoshan personally entered the Master's room and had his understanding secretly verified. After lingering for several years, he took his leave of the Master. The Master asked, "Where are you going?" He said, "To an unchanging place." The Master said, "In an unchanging place, how could there be any going?" He said, "Going is also unchanging." The Master also said, "When you return to your native village, do you not pass over Feiyuan Ridge?" He said, "Yes." The Master said, "When coming here, did you not come by Feiyuan Ridge?" He said, "Yes." The Master said, "There is one person who does not pass over Feiyuan Ridge and yet arrives here. Do you know him?" He said, "He has no 'there' to go to." The Master said, "What principle do you see, that you say he has no 'there' to go to?" He said, "If one has not reached this ground, how could one understand how to speak like this?" The Master then instructed him, saying, "At the place of my late master Yunyan, I personally received the seal of the Precious Mirror Samādhi, which exhausts phenomena to the utmost essence; I now entrust it to you." The Master also said, "In the age of the latter-day Dharma, people have mostly dry wisdom. If you wish to distinguish the true from the false, there are three kinds of leakage: first, the leakage of views—the dynamic capacity does not leave its position and falls into a sea of poison; second, the leakage of sentiment—it stagnates in inclination and aversion, and one's view becomes one-sided and withered; third, the leakage of words—investigating the subtle, it loses the essential principle, and the dynamic capacity obscures beginning and end. The defiled intellect of students cycles round and round, never stepping beyond these three kinds. You ought to know this."
