青林在洞山栽松次，有劉翁者求偈，作偈曰：「長長三尺餘，欝欝覆青草，不知何代人，得見此松老？」劉得偈呈師，師謂曰：「此是第三代洞山主人。」

While Qinglin was planting pines at Dongshan, an elder named Liu requested a verse. He composed a verse, saying: / 'Full three feet and more in length, / Luxuriantly covering the green grass; / I wonder in what generation people / Will get to see this pine grow old?' / Elder Liu took the verse and presented it to the Master. The Master said to him, "This is the master of Dongshan for the third generation."
