北院辭師擬入嶺去，師曰：「善為飛猿，嶺峻好看。」院沈吟良久。師曰：「通闍黎！」院應：「諾。」師曰：「何不入嶺去？」因此省悟，更不入嶺，師事於師，時號钁頭通。

Beiyuan took his leave of the Master, intending to cross into the Ling [range]. The Master said, "Do well as a flying ape; the ridge is precipitous, watch your step." Yuan pondered for a long time. The Master said, "Ācārya Tong!" Yuan responded, "Yes." The Master said, "Why do you not cross into the Ling?" Through this he was awakened and did not enter the Ling, but served the Master as his disciple. At the time he was known as Mattock Tong.
