一日雲巖謂眾曰：「有箇人家兒子，問著無有道不得底。」師問：「他屋裏有多少典籍？」巖曰：「一字也無。」師曰：「爭得恁麼多知？」巖曰：「日夜不曾眠。」師曰：「問一段事還得否？」巖曰：「道得却不道。」

One day Yunyan addressed the assembly: 'There is a son of a household whom, whatever you ask, cannot fail to answer.' The Master asked: 'How many scriptures are in his house?' Yunyan said: 'Not a single word.' The Master said: 'How did he come to know so much?' Yunyan said: 'Day and night he has never slept.' The Master said: 'Would it be permissible to ask him about a certain matter?' Yunyan said: 'He could speak of it, but he does not.'
