師問僧：「三人同行，一人解語，一人不解語，那箇一人是什麼？」對云：「此豈不是辨得主客也？」師曰：「是也。」云：「如何是客？」師曰：「語與不語俱是客。」又曰：「如人解弄珠，不觸手、不落地，即今往來底，喚作什麼即得？」無對。師自代曰：「不得，不得。」

The Master asked a monk, 'Three people walk together: one knows how to speak, one does not know how to speak; what is that other one?' [The monk] replied, 'Is this not distinguishing host and guest?' The Master said, 'Yes.' [The monk] said, 'What is the guest?' The Master said, 'Both speaking and not speaking are guests.' He also said, 'Like someone who knows how to play with a jewel: it does not touch the hand and does not fall to the ground. Right now, what should one call that which comes and goes?' There was no answer. The Master spoke on his own behalf: 'Cannot, cannot.'
