黃蘗從鹽官領三百眾到南泉，每為三百人說法次，南泉便到說法處云：「借此道場還許一問否？」蘗云：「便請。」泉問：「定慧等學明見佛性，此理如何？」蘗云：「十二時中不依倚一物。」泉云：「莫是長老見處麼？」蘗云：「不敢。」泉云：「醬水錢即且置，草鞋錢教什麼人還？」有僧舉似師，師曰：「責狀了喫棒。」

Huangbo led three hundred followers from Yanguan to Nanquan. Whenever he was preaching the Dharma for the three hundred people, Nanquan would go to the preaching place and say, 'Borrowing this place of the Way, may I ask a question?' Huangbo said, 'Please do.' Nanquan asked, 'When concentration and wisdom are studied equally and one clearly sees the Buddha-nature, what is this principle?' Huangbo said, 'Throughout the twelve periods of the day, not relying upon a single thing.' Nanquan said, 'Could this be the Elder's view?' Huangbo said, 'I would not dare say so.' Nanquan said, 'Let alone the money for bean-paste water—who will pay back the money for the straw sandals?' A monk cited this to the Master. The Master said, 'After signing the confession, take the blows of the stick.'
