師到田畔，有師僧插田，有一僧倒插。師問：「闍黎！因什麼倒插？」對云：「心中活在。」師不言歸院。翌日眾僧普請出次，日先出，候問昨日倒插田僧出來。其僧末後出門，師問：「闍黎！昨日東園斫竹誰？」其僧罔測云：「不知。」師曰：「闍黎！什麼處人？」云：「鄧州人。」師曰：「老僧行脚時曾往過來。」

The Master went to the edge of the field, where monks were transplanting rice seedlings; one monk was transplanting them backwards. The Master asked, 'Ācārya! Why transplant backwards?' [The monk] replied, 'Alive in the mind.' The Master said nothing and returned to the monastery. The next day, when the monks went out for collective work, the Master went out first to wait and ask about the monk who had transplanted backwards the day before as he came out. That monk was the last to leave the gate. The Master asked, 'Ācārya! Who was chopping bamboo in the eastern garden yesterday?' The monk, bewildered, said, 'I do not know.' The Master said, 'Ācārya! Where are you from?' [The monk] said, 'A man of Dengzhou.' The Master said, 'When this old monk was on itinerant pilgrimage, I once went there.'
