A monk asked the Master, 'I have heard that the upādhyāya speaks of bone-scraping Chan; please, upādhyāya, scrape from all four quarters and eight directions.' The Master said, 'There is nowhere to scrape.' [The monk] said, 'The upādhyāya happens to be a skilled hand; why can you not scrape?' The Master said, 'Have you not heard it said that worldly physicians fold their hands?' [The monk] asked, 'What is the eye of a good spiritual friend?' The Master said, 'A paper twist without oil.' [The monk] asked, 'Throughout the twelve periods of the day, what should one offer?' The Master said, 'No thing.' [The monk] asked, 'What about the urgent point of life and death?' The Master said, 'Do not mix breeds.' [The monk] said, 'What should one offer?' The Master said, 'Offer empty space.' [The monk] said, 'Are empty space and non-empty space not alike when brought forward?' The Master said, 'Saying they are alike is acceptable; saying they are not alike is also acceptable.' [The monk] said, 'What is being alike?' The Master said, 'Before the eyes.' [The monk] said, 'What is not being alike?' The Master said, 'Before the eyes, it is not.' [The monk] asked, 'What about when returning to the source and going back to the origin?' The Master said, 'Like a single flake of snow falling from the sky the size of a silken hair; if something catches it, it does not reach the ground.' [The monk] asked, 'What about when absent for a moment, like a dead person?' The Master said, 'Better bury him.' He also said, 'Stinking!' He also said, 'Life has ended!'
