雲巖諱日，師營齋。僧問：「和尚於雲巖處得何指示？」師曰：「雖在彼中，不蒙指示。」云：「既不蒙指示，又用設齋作甚麼？」師曰：「爭敢違背他。」云：「和尚發跡南泉，為甚麼却與雲巖設齋？」師曰：「我不重先師道德佛法，秖重他不為我說破。」僧云：「和尚為先師設齋，還肯先師也無？」師曰：「半肯半不肯。」云：「為甚麼不全肯？」師曰：「若全肯，即孤負先師也。」問：「欲見和尚本來師，如何得見？」師曰：「年牙相似即無阻矣。」僧擬進語。師曰：「不躡前蹤，別請一問。」僧無對。雲居代云：「恁麼則不見和尚本來師也。」僧問長慶：「如何是年牙相似者？」慶云：「古人恁麼道，闍黎又向這裏覓箇甚麼？」

On Yunyan's memorial day, the Master held a feast. A monk asked, "What instruction did the Upādhyāya receive at Yunyan's place?" The Master said, "Although I was with him, I received no instruction." The monk said, "Since you received no instruction, what is the use of holding a feast?" The Master said, "How would I dare go against him?" The monk said, "The Upādhyāya began his career under Nanquan; why then do you hold a feast for Yunyan?" The Master said, "I do not value our late master's virtue or Buddhadharma; I only value that he did not explain it away for me." The monk said, "The Upādhyāya holds a feast for the late master; do you approve of the late master or not?" The Master said, "Half approve, half disapprove." The monk said, "Why not completely approve?" The Master said, "If I completely approved, I would be failing our late master." The monk asked, "If one wishes to see the Upādhyāya's original master, how can he be seen?" The Master said, "If your years of age are similar, there will be no obstruction." The monk was about to speak further. The Master said, "Without treading on previous footprints, please ask another question." The monk had no reply. Yunju said on his behalf: "If so, one cannot see the Upādhyāya's original master." A monk asked Changqing, "What is one whose years of age are similar?" Qing said, "The ancients spoke thus; what are you seeking here, ācārya?"
