1.38

師供養雲巖真次，僧問：「先師道：秖這是。莫便是否？」師曰：「是。」云：「意旨如何？」師曰：「當時洎錯會先師意。」云：「未審先師還知有也無？」師曰：「若不知有，爭解恁麼道；若知有，爭肯恁麼道。」長慶云：「既知有，為甚麼恁麼道？」又云：「養子方知父慈。」

While the Master was making offerings before the portrait of Yunyan, a monk asked, "Our late master said, 'Just this is it.' Could it be just this?" The Master said, "Yes." The monk said, "What is the meaning?" The Master said, "At that time I almost misunderstood our late master's meaning." The monk said, "I wonder, did our late master know that it exists or not?" The Master said, "If he did not know that it exists, how could he have spoken thus? If he knew that it exists, how could he have been willing to speak thus?" Changqing said, "Since he knew that it exists, why did he speak thus?" He also said, "Only when raising a child does one know a father's benevolence."
