陸互大夫問南泉云：「弟子家中有一片石，或時坐、或時臥，如今擬鐫作佛，還得否？」泉曰：「得。」陸曰：「莫不得否？」泉曰：「不得。」雲巖曰：「坐則佛，不坐則非佛。」師曰：「不坐即佛，坐即非佛。」

Grand Master Lu Hu asked Nanquan, "In my home there is a piece of stone; sometimes I sit on it, and sometimes I lie on it. Now I intend to carve it into a Buddha—can I do so?" Nanquan said, "You can." Lu said, "Could it be that I cannot?" Nanquan said, "You cannot." Yunyan said, "When sat upon, it is a Buddha; when not sat upon, it is not a Buddha." The Master said, "When not sat upon, it is a Buddha; when sat upon, it is not a Buddha."
