南泉問神山：「作什麼？」對云：「打羅。」泉曰：「手打？脚打？」神山云：「請和尚道。」泉曰：「分明記取，舉似作家。」師別曰：「無脚手者始解打羅。」

Nanquan asked Shenshan, "What are you doing?" He replied, "Beating the sieve." Nanquan said, "Do you beat it with your hands, or beat it with your feet?" Shenshan said, "Please, Upādhyāya, say it." Nanquan said, "Remember it clearly, and cite it to an adept." The Master said alternatively, "Only one who has no feet or hands understands how to beat the sieve."
