1.33

師一日問雪峯：「作甚麼來？」雪峯云：「斫槽來。」師云：「幾斧斫成？」雪峯云：「一斧斫成。」師云：「猶是這邊事，那邊事作麼生？」雪峯云：「直得無下手處。」師云：「猶是這邊事，那邊事作麼生？」雪峯休去。（汾陽昭代云：「某甲早是困也。」）

One day the Master asked Xuefeng, "What have you been doing?" Xuefeng said, "Chopping a trough." The Master said, "How many axe strokes did it take to complete?" Xuefeng said, "Completed with a single axe stroke." The Master said, "That is still a matter of this side; what is the matter of that side like?" Xuefeng said, "There is simply no place to lay one's hand." The Master said, "That is still a matter of this side; what is the matter of that side like?" Xuefeng broke off. (Fenyang Zhao spoke on his behalf: "I am already exhausted.")
