雪峯作飯頭，淘米次，師問：「淘沙去米，淘米去沙？」雪峯云：「沙米一時去。」師云：「大眾喫箇甚麼？」雪峯遂覆却米盆。師云：「據子因緣，合在德山。」（瑯琊覺云：「雪峰與麼去，大似拋却甜桃樹，尋山摘醋梨。」天童覺云：「雪峰步步登高，不覺草鞋跟斷。若也正偏宛轉、敲唱雙行，自然言氣相合、父子相投。且道洞山不肯雪峰，意在什麼處？萬里無雲天有過，碧潭似鏡月難來。」雪竇宗云：「直木不棲鸞鳳，金針已繡鴛鴦。若不是新豊老人，便見氷消瓦解。」）

When Xuefeng was serving as the head cook, as he was washing rice, the Master asked, "Are you sifting the sand to remove the rice, or sifting the rice to remove the sand?" Xuefeng said, "Sand and rice are removed at once." The Master said, "What will the great assembly eat?" Xuefeng thereupon overturned the rice basin. The Master said, "According to your nidāna, you belong at Deshan." (Langye Jiao said, "Xuefeng's going this way is much like abandoning a sweet peach tree and searching the mountains to pick sour pears." Tiantong Jue said, "Xuefeng climbed higher with every step, unaware that the strap of his straw sandal had broken. If he had accommodated the upright and crooked, striking and singing together, then speech and spirit would naturally have harmonized, father and son in accord. Tell me: what was Dongshan's intention in not approving Xuefeng? In a cloudless sky of ten thousand miles, there is still a fault; when the jade-green pool is like a mirror, the moon is hard to reflect." Xuedou Zong said, "A straight tree does not shelter luan or phoenix; the gold needle has already embroidered mandarin ducks. Were it not for the old man of Xinfeng, one would immediately see ice melting and tiles shattering.")
