The Master instructed the assembly, saying, "Brothers, in early autumn and late summer, whether going east or going west, you must head straight to the place where there is not an inch of grass for ten thousand miles; only then will you get it." After a pause, he said, "Just tell me, how do you go to the place where there is not an inch of grass for ten thousand miles?"
Later someone brought this up to Shishuang. Shishuang said, "Why didn't he say: 'As soon as you step out the gate, there is grass'?"
When the Master heard this, he said, "In the great land of the Tang, how many people could there be [like this]?" (Dayang Xuan said, "Nowadays, even if one directly says that without stepping out the gate, the grass is still boundless and overgrown. Tell me, where ought one to tread?" After a pause, he said, "Do not guard the greenness of unusual grass on cold cliffs; dwelling in white clouds, the lineage is not subtle." Baiyun Duan said, "If you can see the hermit, then you can see Dongshan. If you can see Dongshan, then you can see the hermit. Seeing Dongshan is easy; seeing the hermit is difficult, because he is not fettered by being an abbot. Have you not heard it said: 'Clouds on the ridge top never cease to be idle; water flowing in the ravine's depth is all too hurried'?" Guishan Guo said, "Severing nails and cutting through iron, he throws open the subtle pass toward the beyond. Words true and speech sincere, they point directly to the essential path for that person. Now tell me, how do you understand 'As soon as you step out the gate, there is grass'? Shishuang spoke thus, and Shangfeng brought it up thus. None of you may stir; if you stir, thirty blows of the staff." Jingshan Gao said, "A single drop of lion's milk scatters ten bushels of donkey's milk.")
