6.40

舉。洞山示眾云。秋初夏末兄弟。或東或西。直須向萬里無寸草處去（唆猫入枯井）又云。只如萬里無寸草處。作麼生去（一言既發駟馬難追）石霜云。出門便是草（自看脚下）大陽云。直道。不出門亦是草漫漫地（沒爾廻避處）。

Case: Dongshan instructed the assembly, saying: "Brethren, at the beginning of autumn and the end of summer, whether heading east or west, you must go directly to a place where there is not an inch of grass for ten thousand miles." (Instigating a cat into a dry well.) He also said: "Just as for a place where there is not an inch of grass for ten thousand miles, how do you go?" (Once a word is spoken, a team of four horses cannot overtake it.) Shishuang said: "Stepping out the door, it is grass." (Look beneath your own feet.) Dayang said: "I would say directly: even without stepping out the door, grass is everywhere overflowing." (You have nowhere to avoid it.)
