師問德上座：「菩薩在定，聞香象渡河，出甚麼經？」僧云：「出《涅槃經》。」師曰：「定前聞？定後聞？」僧云：「和尚流也。」師曰：「道也太殺道，始道得一半。」僧云：「和尚如何？」師曰：「灘下接取。」

The Master asked Senior Monk De, "When a bodhisattva is in samādhi and hears a fragrant elephant crossing a river, in what sūtra does this appear?" The monk said, "It appears in the Nirvāṇa Sūtra." The Master said, "Is it heard before samādhi or after samādhi?" The monk said, "The Master is drifting with the stream." The Master said, "You have said a great deal, but you have only said half." The monk said, "What about the Master?" The Master said, "Catch it below the rapids."
