僧問：「眉與目還相識也無？」師曰：「不相識。」僧云：「為甚麼不相識？」師曰：「為同在一處。」僧云：「恁麼則不分也。」師曰：「眉且不是目，目且不是眉。」僧云：「如何是目？」師曰：「端的去。」僧云：「如何是眉？」師曰：「曹山却疑。」僧云：「和尚為什麼却疑？」師曰：「若不疑，即端的去也。」

A monk asked, "Do the eyebrows and the eyes know each other?" The Master said, "They do not know each other." The monk said, "Why do they not know each other?" The Master said, "Because they are in the same place." The monk said, "If so, then they are not distinguished." The Master said, "The eyebrows are by no means the eyes, and the eyes are by no means the eyebrows." The monk said, "What are the eyes?" The Master said, "Straight to the point." The monk said, "What are the eyebrows?" The Master said, "Caoshan, however, doubts." The monk said, "Why does the Venerable doubt?" The Master said, "If I did not doubt, then it would go straight to the point."
