1.52

僧問：「國內按劍者是誰？」師曰：「曹山。」僧云：「擬殺何人？」師曰：「但有，一切總殺。」僧云：「忽逢本父母又作麼生？」師曰：「揀甚麼？」僧云：「爭奈自己何？」師曰：「誰奈我何？」僧云：「為什麼不殺？」師曰：「無下手處。」

A monk asked, "Who is the one clasping the sword within the state?"
The Master said, "Caoshan."
The monk said, "Whom do you intend to kill?"
The Master said, "Whoever there is—I kill them all."
The monk said, "If all of a sudden you meet your own parents, what then?"
The Master said, "What is there to choose?"
The monk said, "What can be done about oneself?"
The Master said, "Who can do anything about me?"
The monk said, "Why do you not kill [it]?"
The Master said, "There is no place to lay a hand."
