溈山一日喚院主，院主來，山曰：「我喚院主，汝來作什麼？」院主無對。師代曰：「也知和尚不喚某甲。」溈山又令侍者喚第一座，第一座來，山曰：「我喚第一座，汝來作什麼？」師代曰：「若令侍者喚，恐不來。」

One day Guishan called the monastery director. The director came. Shan said, "I called the monastery director; what did you come for?" The director had no reply. The Master spoke on his behalf, "I also knew that the Venerable Monk was not calling me." Guishan also ordered his attendant to call the head monk. The head monk came. Shan said, "I called the head monk; what did you come for?" The Master spoke on his behalf, "If you order the attendant to call him, I fear he would not come."
