溈山一日喚院主，院主來，山曰：「我喚院主，汝來作什麼？」院主無對。師代曰：「也知和尚不喚某甲。」又令侍者喚第一座，第一座來，山曰：「我喚第一座，汝來作什麼？」師代曰：「若令侍者喚，恐不來。」

One day Guishan called the monastery director. The monastery director came. Guishan said: 'I called the monastery director; what did you come for?' The monastery director had no reply. The Master spoke in his place: 'I also know the Venerable was not calling me.' Again [Guishan] ordered the attendant to call the head monk. The head monk came. Guishan said: 'I called the head monk; what did you come for?' The Master spoke in his place: 'If you had the attendant call, I was afraid he would not come.'
