Ascending the hall, after a long silence [the Master] said: "Is there anyone who can speak? Let the one who can speak come forth."
The assembly was silent.
The Master raised his staff and said: "Just now it was a small cesspool; now it is a big cesspool." Then he stepped down from the seat.
[A monk] asked: "The ten thousand dharmas return to the one; I do not ask about the one, but what are the ten thousand dharmas?"
The Master said: "You have come here to speak entwining vines and deceive me."
[A monk] asked: "Why was the holy monk bitten by a tiger?"
The Master said: "To serve as a model for the people of the world."
[A monk] asked: "Throughout the twelve periods of the day, how should one apply the mind so as not to fail what has been handed down from above?"
The Master said: "Save effort."
[The monk] advanced and asked: "What is the matter of saving effort?"
The Master said: "Save on the preceding words."
[A monk] asked: "Where the myriad mechanisms do not reach, how does one know it is there?"
The Master said: "Can it be subsumed?"
[The monk] advanced and asked: "What about daily affairs?"
The Master said: "One arrow reaches Silla; in the Great Han empire one speaks entwining vines."
[A monk] asked: "The student intends to pose a question; will you allow it or not?"
The Master said: "The Buddha does not deprive sentient beings of their wishes."
[A monk] asked: "How should one proclaim it so as not to fail the incoming capacity?"
The Master said: "Deeply acknowledge one question."
[A monk] asked: "When the merits of the thousand sages are perfected, how should one strike and polish in the obscurity?"
The Master said: "A person of clarity within the phrase."
[A monk] asked: "In the three realms, what thing is superior to the Buddha?"
The Master said: "I allow you one question."
[A monk] asked: "I do not ask about plucking leaves and seeking branches; what is cutting straight to the root source?"
The Master said: "Quickly make three bows."
[A monk] asked: "When one's own affair is not yet clear, how do you instruct?"
The Master said: "Not evading the incoming capacity—can you bear it?"
[A monk] asked: "When one comes with all one's capacity, Master, do you receive him or not?"
The Master said: "A single question is not mistaken."
The student said: "Set aside the question for a moment; Master, do you receive him or not?"
The Master said: "Look closely at the preceding words."
[A monk] asked: "I do not ask about beyond Vairocana; Master, please leave a little bit of empty space."
The Master said: "Grabbing you by the throat, what will you say?"
[A monk] asked: "What is the student's self?"
The Master said: "A fork and a jab."
[The monk] advanced and asked: "Is that not it?"
The Master said: "Suru, suru."
