Ascending the hall, he said: "Today I am speaking entanglements with you—shit-ash, urine-fire, muddy pigs, and mangy dogs that do not know good from bad, making a living inside a shit-pit. Therefore it is said: take the whole heaven, earth, and great world, the three vehicles and twelve divisions of the teaching, the buddhas of the three periods of time, and the spoken teachings of the world's venerable teachers, and comprehend them all at once on your eyelashes! Even if you were to understand it all at once right here, you would still be an unsuitable fellow, leaping for no reason into a shit-pit. If you were to pass before the gate of my patch-robed monks, I would break your legs." At that time, three monks came forward together and made prostrations. The Master said: "One indictment received and cleared." A monk asked: "How can one quickly transcend the three realms?" The Master said: "How can one quickly transcend the three realms?" The monk advanced and asked: "Yes." The Master said: "If yes, then stop." A monk asked: "When one is busy all day long, how is it?" The Master said: "Face to face with the turning point, there is an echoless path." The monk advanced and asked: "How so?" The Master said: "It cannot be spoken." A monk asked: "When a single sweeping clears everything completely, how is it?" The Master said: "What can you do about this old monk?" The monk advanced and asked: "This is on the Upādhyāya's part." The Master said: "This fellow who seizes on illusions!" A monk asked: "What is the Way?" The Master said: "Penetrate through a single character." The monk advanced and asked: "How is it after penetrating through?" The Master said: "A thousand li share the same wind." A monk asked: "The ancients said that there is knowledge of the ultimate matter. What is the ultimate matter?" The Master said: "What can you do about it being in this old monk's hands?" The monk advanced and asked: "I am asking about the ultimate matter." The Master then hit him with his staff and said: "Humph, humph! Just as I was poking through it, you went on asking for instruction. Your sort everywhere only knows how to talk confusion! Come forward; let me ask you: you usually discuss on the long bench what is transcendent and what is downward, transcending the buddhas and surpassing the patriarchs. Tell me, does a water buffalo have the principle of transcending buddhas and surpassing patriarchs?" The monk said: "Just now someone already asked." The Master said: "This is what you learned on the long bench; I don't want it. If there is, say there is; if there is not, say there is not." The monk said: "If there is, why does it still wear fur and horns?" The Master said: "I knew all along you are just one of those who echo words." He also said: "Come, come! Let me further ask you people: carrying a staff across your shoulders, you say, 'I practice Chan and study the Way,' and then seek a principle that transcends buddhas and surpasses patriarchs. Let me ask you: throughout the twelve hours of the day, walking, standing, sitting, lying down, defecating, and urinating, even down to the worms in the privy and the butcher's stall where mutton is sold in the marketplace—is there the principle of transcending buddhas and surpassing patriarchs? Those who can speak, come out! If not, do not hinder me from walking east and walking west." He then stepped down from the seat. Seeing a monk enter, the Master said: "Tiles crumble and ice melts." The monk said: "What fault does the student have?" The Master said: "Seven blows of the staff counter thirteen." A monk asked: "What is the meaning of the coming from the West?" The Master said: "On the long bench there is congee and there is rice." A monk asked: "I have received an ancient's saying: 'The Way has no crossroads; those who stand are all in danger.' What is the Way?" The Master said: "Join in the communal work and see." A monk asked: "What is the phrase outside the teachings of the three vehicles?" The Master said: "The ācārya asks a question; this old monk leaps three thousand li." The monk advanced and asked: "I thank the Master for pointing it out." The Master said: "Stop, stop! What do you say this old monk's words mean?" There was no answer. The Master said: "Come back after thirty years, and I will give you thirty blows of the staff!" A monk asked: "When the great assembly gathers like clouds, what matter do they discuss together?" The Master said: "Frightening your old dad at home." A monk asked: "The phrase of Caoxi is known throughout the land. I wonder, whose phrase of Yunmen can be heard?" The Master said: "The ācārya does not hear it." The monk advanced and asked: "Can the student approach closely?" The Master said: "Carefully hesitate and see."
