Ascending the hall, [the Master] said: "What have all of you run here for without reason to seek? This old monk only knows how to eat, drink, and defecate; what else do I know how to do? You go on pilgrimage in all directions, practicing Chan and inquiring into the Way; let me ask you: what is that affair you have attained through practice in all directions? Try citing it!" He also said: "Can you fool the old master of your own house in between? Chasing behind this old fellow's buttocks, picking up a bit of spittle and chewed cud, taking it to be yourselves, you immediately say, 'I understand Chan, I understand the Way!' Even if you could recite the entire canon of teachings, what do you intend to do with it? The ancients acted out of having no other choice: seeing you running around wildly, they spoke to you of bodhi and nirvāṇa—which is burying you and tethering you to a stake! Seeing again that you did not understand, they said to you: 'It is not bodhi and nirvāṇa.' Knowing such things is already inappropriate; yet you go further and look for their commentaries! Such folk extinguish the race of Bodhidharma; if it had always been like this from antiquity, how could it have reached today? When I was on pilgrimage earlier, there was a group of people who provided me with commentaries; they had no bad intentions, but once I saw through them one day, it became a laughingstock! If I do not die in three to five years, I will break the legs of these people who extinguish Bodhidharma's race with an axe! Nowadays in all directions there are plenty of emerging world-teachers who fabricate and contrive—why don't you go among them? What dried dung scraper are you looking for here?" The Master then stepped down to the floor and drove them away with his staff all at once. A monk asked: "What is the single resolution of all dharmas?" The Master said: "Do not let yourself lose the question." Another asked: "How is it when gaining life amid death?" The Master said: "Traveling three thousand in the morning, eight hundred at night." Another asked: "When the great assembly gathers like clouds, what matter do they discuss together?" The Master said: "Today the order is issued to let it go." The monk bowed; the Master hit him. Another asked: "What is the student's self?" The Master said: "Afraid that I do not know?" Another asked: "What is a phrase that penetrates the dharmakāya?" The Master said: "The sea is calm and the river is clear." A Daoist priest asked: "Seeing and hearing are without sound and form—this was already spoken by Laozi. Regarding Yunmen's single phrase, please instruct me, Master!" The Master said: "Vastly distant is the road to India." The Daoist was silent. As the Master was about to step down from the seat, the Daoist said: "Again I ask the Master to proclaim the essential tenets." The Master said: "Let the one who can speak come forth!" The assembly gave no answer. The Master said: "Then we have failed the host of the request." He then stepped down from the seat.
