師有時云：「燈籠是爾自己，把鉢盂噇飯，飯不是爾自己。」有僧便問：「飯是自己時如何？」師云：「者野狐精三家村裏漢。」復云：「來來，不是爾道飯是自己？」僧云：「是。」師云：「驢年夢見，三家村裏漢。」

The Master sometimes said: "The lantern is your self; holding the bowl you gulp down food, but the food is not your self." A monk then asked: "How is it when the food is the self?" The Master said: "This wild fox spirit, fellow from a three-family village!" He said again: "Come here, come here! Was it not you who said that food is the self?" The monk said: "It was." The Master said: "You will not dream of it until the year of the donkey, fellow from a three-family village!"
