師一日云：「拈槌竪拂、彈指揚眉、一問一答，並不當向上宗乘。」僧便問：「如何是向上宗乘？」師云：「地下閻浮大家總道得，秖如鬧市裏坐朝時，猪肉案頭、茆坑裏蟲子，還有超佛越祖之談麼？」僧云：「有底不肯。」師云：「有底不肯，不可商量時便有、不商量時便無也。若約那箇語話體上會事，直言未到，見解偏枯。」

The Master said one day, "Picking up the mallet and raising the whisk, snapping the fingers and raising the eyebrows, asking and answering—none of this matches the transcendental vehicle of the school." A monk then asked, "What is the transcendental vehicle of the school?" The Master said, "Down on earth in Jambudvīpa everyone can speak of it; but when holding court in the bustling market, on the butcher's chopping block, or among the worms in the privy, is there discourse that surpasses Buddhas and transcends Patriarchs?" The monk said, "Someone refuses to accept it." The Master said, "Someone refuses to accept it—you must not say it exists when discussed and does not exist when not discussed. If you understand the matter on the substance of those words, to speak frankly, you have not arrived, and your view is partial and withered."
