2.14

舉：「僧問資福：『古人拈槌竪拂，意旨如何？』福云：『古人與麼那？』僧云：『拈槌竪拂又作麼生？』福便喝出。」師云：「古人是什麼眼目？」僧云：「和尚作麼生？」師云：「驢年會麼？」僧無對，師復召僧：「來來。」僧近前，師以拂子驀口打。

He cited: "A monk asked Zifu, 'When the ancients took up the mallet or raised the whisk, what was the essential intention?' Zifu said, 'Did the ancients do so?' The monk said, 'Then what about taking up the mallet and raising the whisk?' Zifu gave a shout and drove him out." The Master said, "What sort of eyes did the ancients have?" A monk said, "What about the Upādhyāya?" The Master said, "Will you understand in the year of the donkey?" The monk had no reply. The Master called to the monk again, "Come, come." The monk stepped forward; the Master struck him right across the mouth with his whisk.
