舉：「南泉示眾云：『昨夜三更，文殊普賢相打，各與二十棒，貶向二鐵圍山。』趙州出眾云：『和尚棒教誰喫。』泉云：『王老師有什麼過？』州便禮拜。」師代云：「深領和尚慈悲，某甲歸衣鉢下，得箇安樂。」

[Yunmen] brought up [the following]: "Nanquan addressed the assembly, saying, 'Last night at the third watch, Mañjuśrī and Samantabhadra fought each other; I gave each twenty blows of the stick and banished them to the two Iron Enclosing Mountains.' Zhaozhou came out from the assembly and said, 'Whom does the upādhyāya bid to receive the blows of the stick?' Nanquan said, 'What fault has Old Teacher Wang?' Zhaozhou then made a prostration." The Master said on [Zhaozhou's] behalf, "Having deeply received the upādhyāya's compassion, I, so-and-so, return beneath the robe and bowl, obtaining peace and joy."
