舉：「僧到翠巖，值巖不在，乃下看主事。主事云：『參見和尚也未？』僧云：『未。』主事却指狗子云：『要見和尚，但禮拜者狗子。』僧無語。後翠巖歸，聞此語云：『作麼生道，免得與麼無語。』」師代云：「欲觀其師，先觀弟子。」

[Yunmen] brought up [the following]: "A monk arrived at Cuiyan. Since Cuiyan happened to be away, he went down to see the director of affairs. The director of affairs said, 'Have you had an audience with the upādhyāya yet?' The monk said, 'Not yet.' The director of affairs then pointed to a dog and said, 'If you wish to see the upādhyāya, just prostrate to this dog.' The monk had no words. Later Cuiyan returned, and upon hearing this saying, he said, 'What should have been said to avoid being speechless like that?'" The Master said on [the monk's] behalf, "If you want to observe the master, first observe the disciple."
