師示眾云：「西天二十八祖、唐土六祖、天下老和尚，總在拄杖頭上，直饒會得倜儻分明，秖在半途，若不放過，盡是野狐精。」

The Master instructed the assembly, saying: "The twenty-eight patriarchs of India, the six patriarchs of the Tang land, and the venerable upādhyāyas under heaven are all on the tip of my staff. Even if you understand with extraordinary clarity, you are still only halfway; if I do not let you pass, you are all wild fox spirits!"
