The Master said one day: "Ancient venerable elders, all out of compassion, had words that dropped into the weeds, discerning people following their speech. If it were talk that leaves the weeds, it would not be thus; if it were thus, then there would be repetition in conversational discourse. Have you not seen: Master Yangshan asked a monk, 'Where have you recently left?' The monk said, 'Mount Lu.' Yangshan said, 'Have you ever traveled to the Five Old Men Peaks?' The monk said, 'I have not.' Yangshan said, 'The ācārya has not traveled the mountain.'" The Master said: "These words are all talk dropping into the weeds out of compassion."
