問僧：「甚處來？」僧云：「南華塔頭來。」師云：「還見祖師麼？」僧云：「南華橋折。」師云：「南嶽石橋又作麼生？」無對，師云：「學語之流。」代云：「便出去。」又云：「上也。」

He asked a monk, "Where do you come from?" The monk said, "From the stūpa precinct at Nanhua." The Master said, "Did you see the Patriarch?" The monk said, "The bridge at Nanhua is broken." The Master said, "What about the stone bridge at Nanyue?" There was no answer. The Master said, "A follower who merely parrots words!" Answering on their behalf, he said, "Walk right out." He also said, "Climbed up."
