師入京朝覲歸，至大橋，山門煎茶迎師。師喫茶果次，僧侍立，師語三參隨僧云：「是儞京中無可喫。」乃拈一𭪱果子與一僧，其僧接得便去，又語一僧云：「我不與儞。」僧無對。師云：「那裏也有也。」其僧又無對。別有僧出云：「某甲今日也隨和尚來，請一分得麼？」師云：「嗄。」僧云：「某甲罪過，觸忤和尚。」師云：「我不能唾得儞。」無對。代前語云：「也知果子少，兩人共一𭪱。」又云：「未到山便蒙和尚管顧。」代後語云：「某甲更是。」

The Master went to the capital for an imperial audience and returned; upon reaching the Great Bridge, the monastery brewed tea to welcome the Master. While the Master was taking tea and fruit, with the monks standing in attendance, the Master spoke to the three attending monks, saying, "It is because you had nothing to eat in the capital." He then picked up a piece of fruit and gave it to one monk; that monk took it and left at once. He then spoke to another monk, saying, "I will not give any to you." The monk made no reply. The Master said, "There is also some there." That monk again made no reply. Another monk came forward and said, "Today I have also followed the Upādhyāya here; may I have a share?" The Master said, "Ha!" The monk said, "I am at fault; I have offended the Upādhyāya." The Master said, "I cannot even spit on you." There was no answer. Speaking on behalf of the earlier words, he said, "Knowing too that there is little fruit, two people share a piece." He also said, "Before even reaching the mountain, we receive the Upādhyāya's hospitality." Speaking on behalf of the later words, he said, "I am even more so."
