因僧隨師出三門，師問：「古人道：『大用現前，不存軌則。』作麼生是不存軌則？」無對。復云：「儞問我，與儞道。」僧便問，師引聲云：「釋迦老子來也。」僧又無對。師遂行數步，以拄杖打松樹一下云：「嗄嗄，會麼？」僧云：「不會。」師云：「儞與麼驢年會麼？」代前語云：「多華樹嘲無半子。」代後語云：「由是。」

As a monk was following the Master out of the triple gate, the Master asked, "An ancient said, 'When great function manifests before you, it does not keep to rules.' What is not keeping to rules?" There was no answer. He said again, "You ask me, and I will tell you." The monk then asked. The Master drew out his voice and said, "Old Śākya has come!" The monk again had no answer. The Master thereupon walked several paces, struck a pine tree once with his staff, and said, "Aha, aha! Do you understand?" The monk said, "I do not understand." The Master said, "Will you understand like that in the year of the donkey?" Speaking on behalf of the earlier words, he said, "A tree with many flowers scoffs at not having half a seed." Speaking on behalf of the later words, he said, "Because of this."
