因聞鼓聲，問僧：「打鼓為什麼人？」無語。師云：「儞問我。」僧便問，師云：「打鼓為三軍，不為儞。」代云：「柴不辦。」

Hearing the sound of a drum, he asked a monk, "For whose sake is the drum beaten?" The monk said nothing. The Master said, "You ask me." The monk then asked. The Master said, "The drum is beaten for the three armies, not for you." Answering on their behalf, he said, "The firewood is not ready."
