師坐次，有僧非時上來，師云：「作什麼？」僧云：「請益。」師云：「儞有什麼疑？」僧云：「某甲曾問和尚：『一宿覺般柴，柴般一宿覺。』」師乃敲椅子三下云：「儞作麼生會？」僧云：「一切臨時。」師乃揎拳云：「我共儞相撲一交得麼？」無對。次日其僧再上，值師漱盥次，師乃將水椀過與僧云：「送去厨下著。」其僧送去了却來，師見來，乃從後門出去。其僧云：「比來請益，却得一口椀。」

While the Master was sitting, a monk came up at an irregular hour. The Master said, "What are you doing?" The monk said, "Seeking instruction." The Master said, "What doubt do you have?" The monk said, "I once asked the Upādhyāya: 'Yisu Jue carries firewood; firewood carries Yisu Jue.'" The Master then struck the chair three times and said, "How do you understand?" The monk said, "Everything is according to the occasion." The Master then rolled up his sleeves and said, "Shall you and I have a wrestling bout?" There was no answer. The next day that monk came up again, just as the Master was rinsing his mouth and washing. The Master then handed the water bowl to the monk and said, "Take it to the kitchen." The monk delivered it and came back. Seeing him come, the Master went out by the back door. The monk said, "I came expressly seeking instruction, but only got a mouth bowl."
