The Master asked a monk, "Where have you recently come from?" The monk said, "Zhadu." The Master said, "Where were you for the summer retreat?" The monk said, "Baoci in Hunan." The Master said, "When did you leave there?" The monk said, "Eighth month of last year." The Master said, "I release you from thirty blows of the staff." The next day, the monk came up to inquire after him and said, "Yesterday I received the Upādhyāya's release from thirty blows; I do not know where my fault lay?" The Master said, "Rice-bag! Wandering off to Jiangxi and Hunan like that?" Upon these words the monk had great awakening, and then said, "From now on, I will set up a thatched hut in a place without human habitation, not storing a single grain of rice, not planting a single stalk of vegetables, receiving spiritual friends coming and going from the ten directions, pulling out their nails and removing their wedges, taking off their greasy hats, stripping off their smelly cloth shirts, making them completely untrammeled patch-robed monks—would that not be wonderful?" The Master said, "A rice-bag whose body is like a coconut opens such a big mouth!"
