師問直歲：「今日作甚來？」歲云：「刈茆來。」師云：「刈得幾箇祖師？」歲云：「三百箇。」師云：「朝行三千，暮行八百，東家杓柄長，西家杓柄短，作麼生？」歲無語，師以拄杖打趁。

The Master asked the director of affairs, "What did you do today?" The director said, "I cut thatch." The Master said, "How many Patriarchs did you cut?" The director said, "Three hundred." The Master said, "Walking three thousand in the morning, walking eight hundred in the evening; the ladle handle of the eastern house is long, the ladle handle of the western house is short—what about it?" The director was silent. The Master struck him and chased him out with his staff.
