3.17

師問僧：「甚處過夏？」僧云：「和尚合知。」師云：「我即知。」僧云：「且道某甲甚處過夏？」師云：「老鼠孔裏出頭。」無對。代云：「道著。」代前語云：「便出去。」

The Master asked a monk, "Where did you pass the summer retreat?" The monk said, "The upādhyāya ought to know." The Master said, "Indeed I know." The monk said, "Then tell me, where did I pass the summer retreat?" The Master said, "Sticking your head out of a mouse hole." There was no reply. Answering on his behalf, he said, "You hit the mark." Answering on his behalf for the previous remark, he said, "Go right out."
